Becoming a Barrister

The Bar Council in England has started a site, "Why become a Barrister?" with two short (7-8 min) films for  which gives information about the attraction of a career as a barrister and a very good short FAQ page. Very well done.
The titles of the clips are "Why become a barrister?" and "The bar is open to all".

Judges (and other legal professionals) in England and Wales

The official site of the judiciary of England and Wales has some very interesting activities, including "you be the judge" as well as interviews with district judges (what qualities are needed to be a judge, what are the most difficult decisions...)
Adobe flash required, subtitles (closed captioning or CC as it is known) and transcripts (with a few mistakes).

The site also has a link to an interview with Lord Neuberger, now Master of the Rolls and former Law Lord, who talks about his career. The interview is on the icould site which also has 4-5 min. interviews with different kinds of solicitors, a former barrister now a solicitor, legal executives, heads of legal departments, a paralegal, and prison officers.

The Future of the English Legal Profession

Inside Track, by Charon QC (aka Mike Semple Piggot) recently began a new series 'The future of the legal profession'. The series will present a "range of perspectives from some of the leading figures in the profession on what the legal services arena will look like in five years time and how the employment market in the sector will develop. Interview guests will give their advice on how the next generation of young lawyers can prepare for that market."

Nicholas Green QC – Chairman of the Bar - began the series on May 17th. ± 25 min., transcript available, downloadable .mp3.

There will be an interview each week until 14 June.

The College of Law of England and Wales site has started a series of podcasts - Inside Track - for those considering a career in law. The series will continue through November. The schedule of podcasts is here.

The interviewer for the series, Mike Semple Piggot, whose nom de plume is Charon QC, is the author of the blog, Insite Law, where you can find hundreds of his "lawcasts" which are a very rich source of information about the English legal profession. The blog is also in the process of posting free online resources for UK law students - texts, casenotes and recorded lectures.
