Australian Law Made Simple

An Australian law firm, WildeLegal, has posted a very original way to promote itself through some videos they call shenanigans which present basic legal concepts of Australian law. They do this in a very Australian way, using sporting backdrops (rock climbing, sailing, cross-country biking) as the members of the firm explain, for instance, the Australian court system, how to begin a lawsuit and how to respond to one. They have also posted examples of legal documents that correspond to what they describe in the videos (a statement of claim, a cross-claim...).

Uses of Foreign Law by Courts - the Australian view

The Hon. Michael Kirby, who retired in 2009 as judge of Australia's highest court, spoke at Pace University Law School October 4, 2010. He delivered the annual Sloan lecture on the subject of “The Use of Foreign Judicial Authority…Why Justice Scalia is Wrong.” More information about judge Kirby is here. Law Report - recent programmes

Australian public radio's Law Report  keeps its audio on the internet only for a month or so, and there are a few programmes you might want to download before they disappear (the transcripts remain). On 14 September 2010 Albie Sachs, former judge on the South African Constitutional Court, talked about judging, including how he wrote his judgments. 21 September 2010's programme talks about Australia's complex and conflicting inheritance laws. Judicial impartiality

Parts of a forum on judicial values were posted on the Australian programme The Law Report of Oct. 6, 2009 Two prominent former judges, Australia's Michael Kirby and Germany's Bernhard Schlink, talk frankly about personal values and the task of judging. The bio-tech industry and the law Australian radio's The Law Report of 10 July 2007 has a very interesting program - "Bio-tech industry and the law" which discusses the question not only from an Australian perspective. An American law professor, Lori Andrews, is interviewed extensively as well. For the next month or so, you can download the 30 min. program (.mp3) or listen with RealPlayer. The transcript of the program stays in the archives, but the recordings will disappear after that.
